The Flight of Time

“The Flight of Time”
Dedicated to my father, Avraham Gutkin
My upbringing was different from that of most children. I did not grow up around images from the Bible or the classic fairy tales. Instead, my father, a Professor of Physics, exposed me the beauty of the universe as captured in images suited for scientists. I can still picture my small toddler chair representing the Sun and me circling around it like the Earth, my father teaching me the double rotary, of the earth’s annual revolution around the sun and daily turn around its own axis. Perhaps then it’s not so strange that I have been absorbed of late by Einstein’s Theory of Relativity and even more by Nicolay Kozyrev’s amazing Theory of Time. Kozyrev is the 20th century Russian astronomer who postulated that time is like a stream flowing with its own energy. He suggested the stars throughout the universe are not unlike huge machines manufacturing energy from flow of time. Artists, he said, were just like the stars. They can absorb time and produce energy. The energy of time is always positive. It serves as the foundation for and the salvation of the universe. Soon after my father died he appeared to me in a dream and told me that he had transformed and was now an electromagnetic wave. From this dream came the seed of an idea…then came these paintings…each painted straight from the flight of time. I was and I remain on this flight of time. It’s been three years now
